Yes, Happy New year to you too Nick,
I hope you get that seat belt sorted - annoying to have to sort out something like that!
So into 2009 - all my projects are dormant - overdrive conversion for the Hunter on ice (literally, gearbox covered in thin layer in my leaking shed), Sceptre in garage awaiting time and tuning skills with the old Strombergs. Must sort those leaking core plugs out this year....hope it warms up soon and we see the salt washed away (some hope until early April, as always)
cheers
Colin

if the plugs are leaking its time to change them all sadly.. as the worst for corroding is the one behond the very flywheel itself.. if one is think enough to leak the others are not far behind...

yes, it's the back one, hence the note of dread. I read Aubrey once suggested you could do it by removing gearbox and approaching from the back with engine tilted down slightly. Sounds preferable to engine out job; either way looks like a pain to do properly. Obviously I will change rest of the plugs if I gain sufficient access (ie: if I end up taking out the lump!). Anyway, not a job I will be doing in the cold weather.

to be honest the gearbox is a massive lump as is the engine.. i would rather pull the motor and do all the plugs with no troubles than pull the box and still struggle getting round the motor...

Hi Nick,
And a very happy new year to you too.
Thanks for the tip for my rattling silencer.Havent tried it yet because i am not sure if i should drill from underneath the box or in from the side.I dont know how the baffle plates are positioned.
I did see a twin box system on ebay but i just wasnt sure if it would fit so i may brave the elements and jack the car up tomorrow and drill in from the underneath first.
Will let you know how i get on.
Regards.
Pete

Re: Happy new year to you all !!
ok ive sketched up something in paintbox to show you a rough guide to catching baffles....
hope it makes sense...

if you can imagine the bit inside the boxes is perforated with lots of 3mm holes.. so you want a reasonable sized screw in from the bottom..
either in line with the pipe if it appears to go straight in and out..
or in each one if its a staggered pipe..

All makes sense Nick.
Mine is the staggered section on the left.Disconnected the front pipe from the 1st silencer this morning and had a peek.Yep,a tube inside with lots of small holes but it wasnt loose so i drilled a hole from underneath in line with the pipe to the rear silencer popped in a screw but the silencer still rattles when i shake it so i will have another go tomorrow.
Regards.

Re: Happy new year to you all !!
this is a major cheat but sometimes if they are really bad you can use the metal expanding screws (think they are for hanging hooks on hardboard doors)
as these open out and being metal dont tend to melt..
