Suspension overhaul

Post by garyf » Wed Mar 05, 2008 9:41 am

Hi.I am in the process of trying to put my 1966 Hillman Superminx back on the road after an absence of about 5 years.
I have inspected the suspension/steering units, and I need to replace at least 2 track rod ends, and by the look of it probably quite a few rubber bushes.
I was just wondering if the suspension/steering units are identical to the Humber Sceptre, and if so ,could I use these.
I take it all of the rubber bushes should be replaced as it has been garaged for so long.

Hi
Try superflex for the bushes, much better than squidgy rubber, they are urathane ,don't were out and improve the handling and stearing. :)
Im' afraid i can't find the part numbers but heres the phone number 01749 678152
Do all the bushes, even if some look ok they will have detiorated, and yes the Sceptre bits will fit,try ebay for the trackrod ends theres regulaly a few on there.

hi gary, i would be interested in hearing how you get on overhauling the suspension !!
Myn is a bit wayward at times and although I think trackin is an issue I think soft rubber also is

Nick. if yours is a bit wayward are you using X Plies or Radial? If you are using Radials then there are issues further down the chain, if X Plies change them to Radials first.

to be honest im not sure what they are..
sounds stupid but how would I tell?
the steering is quite heavy too and im sure I dont remember it being heavy on other sceptres I have driven (or am I old now)
should mention the car is also on 14" steel peugeot wheels
I fix things!!

Nick, I have looked at the pics of your car on the other 'Forum', and it looks from the shape that they are 'Radial'. However the easiest way to confirm what they are is to remember that if you look at the tyre size its quoted in inches (560-14) for a 'Crossply' and metric for a Radial (185/14).
If you have radials fitted, you will get a slightly heavier feel to the steering so keep the pressures up to 30psi all round and it should help a bit.
Might sound confusing but its straightforward once you get used to it.

I will increase the pressure at the garage tomorrow on the way to work,
was running 26 front and 24 rear

In which case you have 'radials' fitted. Your pressures are way too low, and would be almost the same as for 'cross ply' tyres.
In fact those pressures are the same as I have for my 'Marina' van which is on 13" rims.
