Rootes1725cc

I have an Axle on my rebuilt Talbot 10, not sure of it's origin but it is shown in the Rootes Manual WSM 145.

The oil seal behind the bearing needs replacing and therefore the hub needs to be taken off.

The Manual shows a four bolted connection to the hub it's self and a protective sleeve inside the hub to protect the half shaft screw thread and a large lever to apply a force to remove the hub.

I have tried using the standard 3 legged extractor, no use as the back of the hub is a rounded corner and of no use.

Has anybody got an extractor suitable or clues how to make one.

I took the half shaft off my commer camper once to change the said oil seal. I didn't have to use and extractor to get it off, from memory.

Hi there, new to the forum but since i did just this last week i thought i could help.

You need a slide hammer.

we removed the half shaft with the hub in place, placed the shaft in the vice wrapped in a cloth, fitted the three leg extractor and tightened it quite tight.
we then used a slide hammer to "shock" the hub off. one good pull and out it came.

No matter how much pressure you have on the puller its force is very gradual, the slide hammer gives it a shock to release, in the same way you release ball joints.
