I GOT ONE.....AN EXHAUST I MEAN!!.

Post by peterhawk58 » Tue Mar 03, 2009 7:05 pm

Hi Sceptre fans,
I have had loads of trouble with my 71 Sceptre since purchase last Aug and have spent many frustrating hours sorting one problem after another which had left me despondent...I say HAD!....so read on.
A little while ago i asked for advice on baffle rattle in the front silencer of my 71 Sceptre and tried an idea or 2 but to no avail so i scoured ebay and got a centre section containing both silencers...phew,i was lucky because they are rare.
I managed to fit it with little difficulty.I couldnt believe how well the job went.Started the lad up and what a great noise he made.No more rattling but he certainly sounds a bit throaty, not that i mind.
Having regained some enthusiasm i decided to tackle the sluggish turn over when starting from cold.I had checked the battery, starter motor and all connections and replaced the earth strap but no change so i took advice and was told to check the timing.I had to borrow a timing light due to a little black box inside the dizzy cap instead of points ( luminition ignition? ).The timing light showed the timing to be advanced by a considerable amount....i mean i couldnt see the chalk mark i had made it was so far out!!!.Anyway, moved the dizzy and then waited until the following day, which was early last month,so very cold, and the lads engine turned over a treat and fired first time.
I then decided to tackle the tappet rattle which had become quite noticeable and,lo and behold, after some adjusting the lad is fairly quiet.
I am wondering if i can keep the momentum going and try to set up the carbs and alter the mixture ( rich, plugs are sooty ) and get the tickover to settle down.
Yep,things have been bad but i think i can see a chink of light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks for reading this.I felt the urge to let you all know how great it feels to make progress......although you probably already know!!
Regards.
Pete
