Rapier Steering Box

Post by Roomsy » Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:24 pm

I've got a '72 Rapier, is the steering box the same as that in the Sceptre (or any other 'arrows' car)? The car failed the MOT because of too much play in the steering, so it will need refurbing or replacing. So if anyone has one, or knows someone in the Reading locality who could refurb it I'd really appreciate it!

Not sure about the steering boxes being the same but I would expect they are. According to the WSM any play in the box can be taken out by removing some of the shims in the box itself. This may be the only problem with yours, unless you have already gone down that road.
I had a similar problem with my MK111 Sceptre which was on an advisory of getting too much play on the steering wheel. However when I tested it the play was minimal and I put it down to an MOT tester who didn't know the cars characteristics. Three years down the line and at a different MOT testing station the car has flown through each test with no problems.

Yes, according to the parts manual they are the same boxes across the Arrow range (a few differences by territory and so on, but the same UK RHD ones for all, at least at that point in time (it is a 72 parts manual). You can take out shims, but often this is a temporary solution as wear can be speeded up.
Depends if you do a lot of miles of course. I agree that the MOT tester may be unaware of design intent of a steering box. Where I take mine they often ask me if it is acceptable play!

If you really get stuck Steering Services in Wimbledon refurbed mine, though in these tough times I hope they are still there. I had too much wear on the output rocker shaft bush - Speedy's sold me one but it was unsuitable - I had a new press fit one put in and reamed to suit.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it's odd what's considered an 'acceptable amount' of play – the car was tested last year at the same place (but obviously a different tester) who passed it and didn't even mention it on the advisory sheet! Will try the shim thing then.
