Grr Myn let me down today :(

Post by rootesmadnick » Mon Mar 16, 2009 6:00 pm

first time ever in the morning the old fart refused to start....

took little bit of diagnosis but eventually found the points had stuck open.. (never had this before)
whipped them out quickly to see if I could wriggle them free but they were totally solid...

on with some old ones out of a spare dizzy and job sorted..

anyone else had problems with new Lucas stuff recently??

Never had probs with the points Nick. My car hadn't been run for about 8 years until last year and the points still worked ok. Just one question although it's probably a silly one! When you last fitted new points did you lubricate the piviot point? as if you forgot this might be the cause of the sticking. also of course as you know lubricate the base plate in the dizzy and a drop of oil on top under the rotor arm. Hopefully the points that got stuck were just a rouge set and the problem won't reoccur.
Best Wishes, Gary.

yeah it seems ok now. I took the faulty ones apart and there was actually corrosion present on the galvanised pin that goes up through the plastic cam follower

thing is its showed up a few other faults now its going smoother at low revs lol... tickover is now 1500 rpms... flat spot on acceleration (actually that was there before)

think the carb needs a tinkering...

I know the timing is only thrown in by ear but I dont get my timing strobe till thursday...

least im mobile again..!!!
