humber sceptre mk3 (arrows)

Post by hoppo » Thu Dec 13, 2012 6:53 pm

Just paid over my hard earned cash for a 69 sceptre no engine or gearbox a bit scruffy but a good solid body. I have located a second hand engine and gearbox, also the prop and pedal box to change from auto to manual, Plans for the coming year are to first strip the interior and dry out prior to prepping for a full respray and new vinyl roof then with new rubbers fit back the glass and trim ect followed by stripping the engine and gearbox for a (quick look?) :D I am sure this will expose more of those pesky gremlins we all love so much this will no doubt take us into next winter when hopefully the engine and box can go in along with any trim having cleaned as much as is possible "Question....carpet is fair to good but faded is it possible to Spray? back to colour" answers on a poscard please !!

The sensible answer is no, but . . . .

. . . I will confess to having done just that with the carpets in a Mini I once owned! However, far better to visit your local Dry Cleaners and buy some colour-fast dye . . . .

Be good if you could post some pictures of your car and the work as you progress . . . ;)

Hi Hoppo, I wish you look with your upcoming epic restoration. with regard to carpets, I am a carpet fitter by trade. my advice is to discard the old carpets and buy a length of cheap black cut pile low tuft carpet, preferably with a felt back. Do this on a hot day or if not use a hair dryer to heat up the carpet. Spray the foot wells with aeresol adhesive and mould the carpets into shape. Probably easy for me to say but if you take your time it's easily doable and not rocket science.

Looks good. Nice colour. Are you keeping it green or changing it?

Thanks for the positive comments, We think we will keep it green (74), I have just finished pulling out the interior, the heater was the last part to come out, when removed it was full of old brocken windscreen!! the floor is nice and solid with two small patches on the drivers side front and rear.the vinyl roof is next to be removed then the preperation can begin I hope to be able to paint the car in the summer months (nice and warm?????) then do the new vinyl roof and refit all the chrome trim "body finished" well thats the plan.... this car is an automatic sceptre with a very early chassis number I checked on the DVLA web site and I was amazed to find only 12 cars are known to them thats seems strange I would have thought that there where llots more than that about, also I checked the hunter and they calim 300 and odd cars known if this is true then I have a rear old beast indeed. Still having trouble with photos my friend talked me through the one thats up here but when I tried to put more up I failed misserably, will keep posting from time to time with hopefully photos of progress, So today is xmas dinner with some friends tomorrow I will strip the heater unit and prepare it for paint then have a breake untill after new year when the first job is to go to north yorkshire and collect the engine and gearbox ect I will be changing the car to a manual hsppy xmas to you all hoppo

Steering box, any one know where to get spares for a burman box the ball race at the very end where the worm sits has a couple of nasty pits and when removed from the car makes a terrible noise, So I would like to replace the ballrace and balls, The oil seal at the bottom of the pitman shaft would be required also.

Other than that no great suprises so far in the strip down, everything has come apart very well nothing damaged except for the rear view mirror which I stupidly left attached when removing the vinyl roof.......Lost my footing and fell in the car through the windscreen hole taking the mirror stem with me

Have some welding to do on the rear panel by the lights a small hole each side and some of the edge missing where the boot seal fits should'nt be hard to fix
doors are very good no rot any where, Locks have been got at......no little fish plates inside just a slot for any key or screw driver come to that, Every lock the same including the ign .........Makes you wonder how it never got nicked, At the front I found some tin worm damage behind the lights so will make up some plates and strengthen that :D

Anyway replies about the steering box would be most welcome Hoppo!
