Hello,
I have read that late Sceptres came with a closer ratio gearbox? Does anybody know if this is the case and how one might tell the difference. I have access to a 1976 Sceptre box. Thank you,
Daniel

Re: Late Sceptre gearbox ratios
Daniel,
if it is off a '76 Sceptre and has J type overdrive fitted, you can be pretty sure it is a close ratio box, since close ratio came in on LH models (1972) and J type followed on L3 chassis (1973). The Estate kept the standard ratios I think, so you never can be 100% sure.
for information, here are the tooth counts on the gears, along with the gear ratios
Standard box:
1st gear 37, layshaft 16 3.35:1
2nd gear 31, layshaft 21 2.14:1
3rd gear 24, layshaft 25 1.39:1
input/4th gear 20, layshaft 29 1:1
Close ratio box:
1st gear 37, layshaft 16 3.12:1
2nd gear 31, layshaft 21 1.99:1
3rd gear 24, layshaft 25 1.29:1
input/4th gear 20, layshaft 27 1:1
