windscreen chrome filler strip.

Post by timmo478 » Tue May 27, 2014 4:34 pm

Hi all, quick question. Does the front screen chrome filler strip actually spread the rubber seal and help seal or is it just for looks?
Advice appreciated.

Having recently fitted a new windscreen rubber id definitely say it spreads and helps seal the screen in the frame.
Bit of a job too.
Buy one of these to help fit the chrome strip into the seal. the tools sold to fit the classic mini type seals dont work with the rigid strips like ours

I found it easier to fit rubber to screen, install the filler strip then fit the whole lot into the aperture

One thing that worked well for me when I used to work on VWs. Use dish washing soap to generously lubricate the rubber before assembly. It does not attack the rubber like many greases, and just washes off when done. I am guessing the probably have a water based silicon grease for this now...

The strip in the ebay auction does not look anything like what is on my car.
But I have a 1961, so maybe it's different.

I will need to replace the rubber surround at some point soon on my car as it is dry and hard as a rock.
