Great 67 needs engine

Just came into possession of great 67 Alpine, great looks and condition except for the engine. My first classic car. Had not been driven for three years and when my mechanic was trying to get it going noticed a crack in the engine block.

Looking to replace with same engine so get get on the road next spring.

Looking for any leads on a replacement engine or any help in getting this great alpine back amonst the living.

If you just need a new block, the 1725 block is common to other Rootes cars like the Minx VI, Rapier V, Super Minx/Vogue IV, Sceptre II. You can even use a block from the later Arrow/Hunter cars, but these have a different engine mount system so you will have to use the engine mount plate from your existing car in the rebuild. Bear in mind that if you use a block from an iron head car (eg Minx) you will need to use the cam from your existing motor ( the inlet-exhaust sequence differe between alloy head and Iron head cars).

Over here in the UK there are specialist welders who can 'stitch weld' a crack in the engine block and bring it back to life again. Not sure whether you have that facility over the pond, but I would have thought so. Saves looking for a replacement engine/block then.

Hi being cheeky a humber sceptre here, but I am a mk2 1966 automatic 1725, I am need of a Solex Carb, B32PAIAS condition not important as mine is wearing out and I would rather have a spare one so it can be refurbished so I am not off the road again . I have had a carb kit fitted and am still not well

They are a rubbish carb. You are better off buying a weber 32/36 DGV carb. They fit straight on the mainfold, and you should be able to tune them a lot easier than the Solex.

If you are that set on another solex, I might have one I will sell - depends where you are?

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum here and need a bit of guidance. I am, due to various circumstances, left to finish my father's partially restored sunbeam alpine. It currently has a rusted engine block (cylinders 2 and 3, I think bear the worst) as a result of a blown head gasket sitting for too long. I am essentially in need of at least a new engine block, but perhaps also crankshaft, pistons, piston rings, etc. How best does one source these? The car is in Columbus, Ohio.

I am by all rights a newbie to this car and don't know quite how to find everything the car needs. I welcome all and any advice.

Option 1 - Buy a new block. These are available in the UK and on sale on ebay

I would contact them to see if they would ship to you. I am sure they would.

Option 2 - get the block bored and source new pistons. Again, the same seller above can sell you a new set of pistons, or you might find a source locally in the US. The crank can have it's ends ground and fit oversize bearings. Again not difficult to do.

Thanks for the reply Andy. I'm going to try and avoid shipping an engine across the Atlantic - though I did send a message to him to inquire. What is the limit these blocks can be safely bored to? My father had originally gotten it bored (though I am not sure to what degree). I will check the bores current diameter when I'm home next weekend (yes the car is 2 hours away from me, which makes it even more difficult).

as a follow up to this i have since read somewhere that the 3 bearing crank models have the dipstick going into a tube in the sump whereas the 5 bearing ones have it going into the block itself... hope this is helpful !
