MK3 Sceptre Front Shocks

Post by vqdave » Fri Aug 24, 2007 10:14 am

Hello all, been having a look at my front shocks and the rubber inside the sring has pretty much fallen apart, i guess this means i need new shocks? If so anyone w=know which ones i should get, had a quick look at the speedyspares website andthey don't seem to list them, only rears.

Also not sure if its related but i am sure my steering is a bit funny. There feels to be far more pressure to turn teh wheel to turn right than left. If going along in a straight line then its easy to go slightly left, a one finger affair but if i want to turn slightly right then i have to physically turn teh wheel.

Any ideas?

Hi, if you refer to the bellows gaiter rubber part, yes, that is an MOT fail as it protects the damper piston. You need to find a suitable replacement, either from Speedy Spares or a motor factors, which could be tricky. Would be interested to see if anyone has any ideas. At one time I bought one from Grimes and it came in a Peugeot packet, so maybe shared with something else.

To change the rubber, you need to remove the strut and compress the spring. Not a hugely difficult job if you have the right tools. The biggest problem is a special tool needed to undo the top mounting nut; I think they are available commercially.

There is no replacement front damper per se, it is built in to the whole strut (unlike at the back of the car), so if the car bobs up and down too much, then you need either a recon strut, or you can use an old method which involves replacement damper inserts. no longer made but occasionally crop up on the famed auction site.

In respect of the steering, does the car wander as well? which points to geometry problems?

thanks for that.
The car doesn't wander it is fine, it just takes far less effort to learn left than right.
Might just be an old car thing?
