Anyone carried out an alternator conversion on a Mk1 1592cc ?? If so, what alternator to use (alternatives from other marques ?) & wiring diagram would be most helpful ??please

 ok here goes how to wire up,standard alt ,
main power lead from dynamo goes to either of the big spades on the alt-other wire on dynamo tape up out of the way ,on the regalator box =w.l.term pull off pull off and extened down to small term on alt, on the reg box in and & out main terms pull off box and join to together,
you need a two inch spacer for the bolt, and must be neg earth,
i hope this helps

Cheers for that Keith, I will investigate it further.....I need too, as I was in Norfolk over the weekend in horrible weather & the dynamo was not happy with lights/wipers/blower all switched on immediately after start up !!
Any reason why it's not possible on Positive Earth systems ?? I'm a bit ignorant to auto-electricals. My Sceptre is running pos-earth, although I'm sure the previous owner said the only reason it was "converted" was so he could run an old valve motorola radio. Does my car need to be on pos-earth ?? Would it have been from new (63 Mk1) ?? Could it be converted back to allow an alternator conversion ??

it was pos when new the conversion can only be done on neg so you will have to change it over the only thing that will give a prob is the radio ?
you will change it ,or put a new one in the glove box , which is what we have done, so you leave the old one in place just not working,!!
you sould have a noon ecl rev conter ,run on a cable ,if not you will have to change it, apart for that no probs , if you give rob a ring he can put you right , he will do you the kit you need for about £50. + pp, hope that helps, keith

The alternator can't run on positive earth as there are diodes inside the rectifier inside the alternator and they will not work with the current going the wrong way,I used a Maxi alternator when i first converted mine, most older Lucas alternators will fit.
Don't forget to disconect the clock ,the guts out a vauxhall clock are much better and negative earth, I had my revcounter converted at Speedy Cables,or you could use a Mk2 counter if you don't mind the different style of lettering on the face of it.
It would be a good idea to use a larger grade of cable from the alternator then the old dymamo used, the new alternator puts out more current ,particulay if you have things like spotlights, heated rear screen.

Hope some of this helps
Oliver
