20/50W engine oil is what is recommended in the handbook so should be perfectly adequate to do the job.
80/90 Hypoy oil was used in gearboxes and rear axles on some cars and usually it was an old /early gearbox design that required it.
BMC/BL started using engine oil for lubrication when the engine and gearbox shared the same housing.

nice one John!!

thats set my mind at ease, means I can get teh syringe out at the weekend and drain/refill the OD and G-box, the back axle can have some ep90 and moly as its a bit of a hummer on overrun but quiet under load

Don't whatever you do put ep oil in a overdrive gearbox ,it will stop the linings in the overdrive gripping the cone and it won't work :(
Use 20/50 for the gearbox/o/d.

thats the plan sceptreman !!

finest duckhams 20/50 for the engine and boxes, and some ep90 for the rear axle

got to drop the sump and change the oil pump first as mine is bent somehow... with the dizzy off you can see the gear skewing about as you spin the motor over !!!
