Oil Pressure

Post by archie001 » Fri Jun 27, 2008 5:34 pm

I have a sceptre 2

Can anybody give me guidelines as to the oil pressure I should expect.

My engine is not burning any oil, nor using a significant amount.

The cold oil presssure is circa 40 - 45.
The hot under load pressure is 30 - 35
The hot idling pressure is 15 to 20

The hot pressure is lower than I expected? Am I right, and if so what are the likely causes???

Thats lower than id expect too, most likely causes are main bearings or oil pump worn , when was the oil last changed , im getting 40 psi hot on tickover and 55 as soon as i accelerate .

Oil was changed only a couple of hundred miles ago... hmmm Could the gauge be wrong? How would I check?

Not sure how you would check the gauge , ive got oil gauges in both our Imps and they dont seemed to go wrong , you could try swapping with another known gauge tempoarily and see what it reads then , you wouldnt need to fit it in the dash as such , just connect it up , you could try bleeding the gauge and see what happens then , tis easy to do just start the car and whilst running loosen the pipe union ( gauge end only ), you will get oil drip every where then tighten it up again with the engine still going , goes without saying dont take it all the way off just loosen slightly , loads of rag required , good luck. :D

I will try this monday.

Now you've described how to bleed the system I have a feeling that the pipe may be loose, as I have a little oil appearing under the dash and in the glovebox. I have always ignored it, but it may be linked.

Thanks again, I shall report back!

mine shows 45 cold this drops off to 15-30 at tickover when hot'

a few days ago the oil pressure relief valve stuck and it showed 0 at tickover and 20 when running..
then it stuck the other way and tickover was showing 95psi !!!

might be worth whipping it out and giving it a clean as its only on the oil filter on the mk2's
(mk 1the same??)

speedy spares do new old stock pumps off the shelf for under 40 quid which amazed me and the sump can be dropped without taking nothing else off which is handy !!!
I fix things!!

I think sounds a likely cause.

I shall try cleaning it first, if that doesn't work i'll contact Speedy spares

Cheers.
