MK1 1592 Gearbox questions?

Post by Jakey's Dad » Thu Feb 25, 2016 10:35 pm

Hi everybody. I realise that this is a 1725cc forum but I was hoping you guys could help my son Jake and I with some info regarding gearboxes. We are building a Mk1 hot rod. We have a 1965 MK1 rolling chassis. We have sourced a stock 1592cc motor because this will be his first driver when he's 17. (He's only 12 and he's a member of the owners club, lolol!) We would have obviously preferred the 1725 as it's more tunable and parts seem to be readily available.

Anyway, I am looking for a suitable gearbox but am under the impression that the earliest MK1's had no synchromesh on 1st gear but that later ones had a synchromesh on all four gears. I am aware that there was a d-type and J-type for the MK3's but they would have been 1725cc engines.

Can anybody tell us which gearboxes will bolt straight to the 1592cc engine and how to identify them?

Many thanks in advance.

Jacob and John

Far as I'm aware the bell housing pattern is the same, early cars had a shorter bell housing than the mk3 hunter shaped cars, and these ran with engine leant over ten degrees so suit differently on the early upright engines, the 1592 is a cracking motor and only has slight differences to the 1725, mainly the bearing crank. And dipstick going into the side of the sump rather than down through the block. It does however have a steel crank compared to the cast iron crank of the 1725. this is all stuff i found so if I'm wrong please tell me otherwise :)
So gearbox wise anything from a pre 67 (arrow body) should be perfect for your engine

Forgot to add the early boxes had a coarse spline on the input shaft with about 14 teeth and the layer boxes had about double this with a fine splined shaft
On the Humber i know the bell housing was also ribbed externally but not sure if this relates to other cars of the age
