Starter motor replacment

Hi, currently replacing the starter motor on my Mark 2 - however, it will not come out passed the exhaust pipes- Does anyone have any experience of removal without having to unbolt the exhaust pipes or manifold. it will nearly come out, but is about half and inch away from clearing the pipes or body- any advice.
