Exhaust system wanted!!.

Post by peterhawk58 » Fri Nov 21, 2008 11:16 am

Hi all,
Got my front windscreen in and sealed.Hoorah!!.
Coming home from Wiltshire the other weekend a rattle started up under the floor.Thought it might be a loose exhaust bracket but,no,its a rattle from inside the front silencer :o .Not too bad with revs above 1000.
So,anybody got an exhaust centre section containing 2 silencers,1 either end,for a 71 Sceptre!?.
Would love to hear from you.

becoming a bit rare that part, PD Gough do a stainless steel system for the Model 'G' with this early arrangement, but obviously that needs a lot of expense. Just have to keep your eyes open for one to come up, and live with the rattle for the moment (by the way, the front box seems to be very close to the body - on my car it can actually touch/ vibrate against it if the engine is on slow idle. Perhaps one of the reasons they moved to the later system to prevent touching and warm feet).

Maybe as the previous person mentioned about the box being very close to the floor of the car you could assuming the box has not rotted get someone with welding equipment to bend the pipes slightly to move the box away from the floor enough to stop it vibrating at low revs? I had a similar problem with my MK1 after I fitted a stainless steel exhaust , from PD Gough, and this was the way my garage solved it at the time. By the way if you are a member of PVHCC I know that PD Gough did used to offer a discount to members of PVHCC when ordering a stainless steel exhaust from them. But this was about 20 years ago! so I don't know if the offer still stands.

Thanks for the info Gary.Had a good look underneath with the engine running and it was not touching the underbody so turned it off and shook the exhaust and it is definitely something rattling inside.
Remember buying a complete s/s system for a Hawk estate years ago from P D Gough, but,as you said, quite expensive.
Thanks again.

Sounds most likely a baffle is loose inside the silencer, not a lot you can do sadly, at least not to my knowledge.

get a 3 inch self tapping screw and drive it into the silencer roughly inline with the two ends....
sometimes it takes a couple of screws but if your lucky you can screw the loose end to the inside of the box effectively nulifying the rattle..
you may have to seal around the screw head using a small amount of exhaust sealer...
I fix things!!
